Learn to play guitar

Do you want to learn to play guitar? I have been playing for over 30 years... pro off and on, most styles. I made this video with the idea in mind that it would be what I wish I had been taught when I started. This is how to learn to play guitar, my way:

Awesome, @judsoncarroll4! My oldest is wanting to learn. Thanks for sharing the video!😁
-
Thanks! I am wondering how accessible my teaching style for music is. Is it too complex or too simple?
-
@judsoncarroll4 I started listening to your video, but the volume is really low on my computer even though I have it turned all the way up. I'm going to find some headphones and finish listening to it tomorrow.
-
Yeah, I am going to have to figure out how to boost the volume a bit for the next one - I am still trying to figure out this new phone!
-
How fun! I have never been able to understand how to hear the notes. It's like there's some secret about it that I didn't get.
-
Humming along is the secret - go very slow at first. Hum a few notes and then find them by trial and error on the fretboard. It will take a while, but soon it will be second nature.

Hey Judson, this is great! Not only is one of my sons practicing his harmonica, he's also been picking up a guitar again.
We will watch your video right away & give feedback.
-
@judsoncarroll4 He listened all the way through & now picked up the guitar. He will be trying a few things that you suggested.
He figured it wasn't too complicated, not too simple. He appreciated the examples to illustrate what you had just said.
The sound was low, so we put it through our stereo speakers, which helped, which might be a good note to add. But I did see that you are wanting to address volume next time.
I passed on the video to my brother to help critique. He can play pretty much any stringed instrument he has picked up and taught all of his kids. He took band instruction in university and took piano as a kid/teen too. I'm not sure if that will help in any way, but for someone who understands teaching & playing, it could prove helpful.
I'll let you know any feedback.

Thanks Laurie. Yep, I need to figure out the new phone. THe video quality is much better than my laptop, but the audio is low. I even used a video editor to increase the voulme!

@judsoncarroll4, I showed your video to my oldest daughter, who has a guitar and is wanting to learn. She took a music theory class this year so she was able to understand some of the terminologies. And the bit about learning cords and not solos was super helpful. She also wanted me to ask about your pic, what kind is it again? She has one that's very bendy and she doesn't like it. She'd like to get one like yours. 😁

I use heavy Dunlop picks. I have some that are small and fat, which I prefer for mandolin. The big, fat pick works better for guitar and tenor banjo.

I took guitar lessons when I was young. I never learned much. This makes so much sense to me. Well done @judsoncarroll4. Maybe one day I will try to learn again. Right now I'm trying to learn drums.
