A question for you, Judson.
What is the species name for the sassafras in your area? S. officinalis?
The reason I ask is that I have found a nursery in southern Ontario selling S. albidum. They might survive here as they are rated for zone 4.
I tried to order some bark from my usual herbal supplier but they were sold out by the time I got the order placed. I've been put back on a mailing list to be notified when it is back in stock.
So I haven't had the chance to make real root beer yet. I've been assembling the other ingredients.
But I have another medicinal use I would like to try this on as well as using it in root beer.

THe one that grows here is albidium - I think it would do fine in your region. It is very hardy.
