Insane Weather!
Wow, it is almost April and we got a severe thunderstorm warning around 10 am and now we just got a tornado warning for central San Diego! That is crazy!
While I was typing this another severe thunderstorm warning came over for Coranado and downtown San Diego!
Is anyone seeing unusual weather this year?

We are having odd weather for the time of year. It has been unseasonably warm. We would typically still be seeing snow this time of year. Our forecast for tomorrow is for 60°F and thunderstorms.
-
@Michelle D Wow, thunderstorms are no joke, stay safe!
-
We've had warmer weather than usual and a lot of severe thunderstorms. There was a tornado that came through a county about an hour away from us the other day that did a lot of damage. We had so much rain a couple mornings ago it was like walking through a wall of rain. It was crazy!
-
We are in the usual transition from winter to spring, which often means unsettled weather. March comes "in like a lion, goes out like a lamb", and that's been pretty accurate this year. Well, a feisty lamb. :-)
Low this morning was about 15F (-10C). We received some snow squalls Wednesday evening, but received less than an inch of new snow and it's already melted off. Day temperatures have been around 40F (5C).
We're now shoveling the ice that has accumulated on the garden. It accumulated on the roof of the garage as snow, then slides off the roof into the garden, burying it deeply.
Some years I can plant the first week of April, but this year I think we'll be in mid-April before I can do much gardening outside.

Here in Austrian Alps we had a few days of summer (almost +20C), a few days with snow up to 10 cm - thus of winter and the rest was spring. Yesterday there was a thunderstorm. And all this weather in one week. It is April tomorrow, so no wonder.
-
@kbmbillups1 stay safe!
-
@Lisa K You stay safe too. There is more crazy weather in California than there is here. I had never heard of atmospheric rivers until recently when I saw you guys were having a lot of them one after the other. We're supposed to have some nice weather next week. I hope you guys do to.

Tons of tornadoes and damage across North America

Last night, in the middle of a severe thunderstorm, a gentleman driving a semi truck with trailer broke down in front of our house. My husband was watching the lightning out the window and noticed him. My husband and my son were able to help him repair a broken hose and get going again. They were so soaked in the process. I know they say it is so uncommon to get struck by lightning but I was still so worried about them standing out there in that.
-
@Lisa K we have been hearing about all the tornado destruction in the USA on our news. Seems very early in the season. Australia has just had its hottest March but luckily for our region we had very good rainfall. The last couple of nights the temp has really dropped & you can feel winter around the corner. We have started cutting firewood, so we’ll be good & ready when the cool weather hangs around. Keep safe!
-
@Lisa K Here in eastern TN the weather is also crazy! There were flowers, it was warm, the bees came out of their hives and were enjoying it all, THEN it froze!! no flowers, no blooms etc!! And now, tonight we have no electricity, probably due to storms and wind!!
I'm ready for things to get back to a regular season!
-
@Lisa K On March 31,23 we had a thunderstorm with lightning and pouring rain. It switched to snow. Waking up on April1st, not six inches, but ten inches of snow had fallen! Wow! My mom at 78 wad outside shoveling. I started up the snowblower and blew the slush and cleaed the remaining snow. Crazy!
-
Also, the ocean is warming at an unnatural rate. Humans need to start carpooling to reduce emissions and truly cut back on overuse of water for making automobiles and fracking. We humans need to decrease our carbon footprints and to act very quickly at doing so otherwise these crazy and wild storms will be all we see fir years to come.
-
@water2world I am with you, when it is not raining here, we are getting strong wind gusts that are bringing down branches like crazy.
@SuperC your mom sounds like my grandmother she was shoveling snow in her 60's until she had a heart attack (she lived into her late 80's). Also, we need China to get on board in helping the environment until then we are just putting a bandaid on the problem.
-
I had never heard of the Atmospheric rivers either. Had to go look them up. That is incredible.
Our weather has been pretty typical for this time of year. We are reaching highs of mid 30'sF to low 40'sF with lows in the teens. Snow or mixed snow and rain predicted for the next 10 days.
@VermontCathy Planting out anytime in April would be so welcome here. We cannot put plants out until the first of June and occasionally even the second week of June. Of course by then we have the long days with lots of daylight. The official sunrise and sunset on June 21, 2023 is listed as sunrise at 4:06 AM and sunset at 11:57 PM.
-
The first time we heard about atmospheric rivers was in November of 21 when one hit the south coast of BC and the northwestern coast of Washington. 300 mm or about 12 inches fell in that one. I posted about the devastating damage in that one.
When we would have storms like that in the past, they were called the "pineapple express" bringing storms from the central Pacific near Hawaii.
Other than a very short spell of warm temps last week, it has been a cold spring. Fresh snow on the ground yesterday morning and its -9C out this morning.
-
We have had the "pineapple express" come through, the difference is that it is usually warmer than what we are getting right now.
-
I just walked out in the garden to check it, and pulled some of the dead tomato and beans stalks from last year.
The ground is still semi-frozen, despite days being well above freezing. I don't think it's going to truly thaw until we stop getting frequent nights below freezing.
In many years I could start preparing the soil about now and begin planting frost-tolerant plants as soon as next week, but this year things are going to get a late start.
On the bright side, my fall-planted onions and garlic are already up, and the claytonia in the raised bed is looking healthy. The secret to early spring harvests is fall planting of the right crops!
-
@VermontCathy everything this year seems to be off, like you one thing that has done well is some Kale I planted last fall.
California has been able to dry out this past week, but I briefly heard about rain and snow later next week.
-
Talk about unusual weather, we had a severe thunderstorm on Good Friday & it took out our landline (phone) which meant no communications for a few days. Thunderstorms in April are very unusual here. In Western Australia, up in the northern section, a category 4 cyclone is bearing down, about to cross the coast & cause havoc. Very late in the season.
-
In an area where the last frost date is mid May, we're using the air conditioner, which we just had serviced. Unusual weather indeed.
-
@JodieDownUnder stay safe!
Wow that is unusual, most everyone is getting snow and/or rain.
-
We will get rain & snow sometime today & tonight. For us, that's normal this time of year.
My chickens have finally picked up their laying (not everyone is on board yet), and the maple sapping has begun! Our geese are back, we've seen some bald eagles spring/early summer songbirds, and I saw a blue heron yesterday. The majority of the winter snow is now gone, but unless we get lots of new moisture, it is shaping up to be a very, very dry year.
-
We woke to fresh snow yesterday morning and a hard frost this morning. Despite all the snow we had this year (and the piles still in the shady part of our property), we had strong winds for about 4 days that evaporated most of the snow. So it didn't get the chance to sink into the ground. Its very dry.
Still ice on the lake. Last week when a neighbour drilled a hole, he said it was 20 inches thick, so it will be awhile before we can go for a canoe. This will be one of the latest dates for the ice to go. I think the previous late spring date for the ice to go was April 16th and we're almost there.
I was out for a drive into the mountains on Monday and what a lot of snow they still have! I hope they have a better melt that retains some of the ground water.
I spotted my first magpie a couple of days ago. We have trumpeter swans on our lake (at least on the thawed portion by the outflow). They usually stay for a few days to a few weeks on the spring migration. Lots of Canada geese. But I haven't seen a heron or crane yet. Usually we hear the cranes before we see them. Haven't heard any grouse drumming yet, either.
-
With all of the rain we have received, we may still have drought conditions due to the mishandling of our water supply by the State.
-
Well, our weather seems to have lost it's mind. Last week we got around 6-8 inches of snow. We were getting temperatures in the mid 30's to mid 40's with everything starting to melt good even seeing ground in a few spots. Then for Monday and Tuesday the weather station called for another 6 inches or so, we got 2-3 foot of snow depending on where in our area you were.
Today was supposed to be partly cloudy and in the high 30's and pushing back into the mid to upper 40's for the next 10 days. So what did we get, My route today took me out about 14 miles in one direction to about 20 miles in the other direction from our food pantry. I saw light snow, then hail, then rain then very heavy snow. Has snowed at my house almost all day. Not heavy yet but will end up with a couple more inches minimum.
-
@vickeym it is either the weather that has gone mad or the Weather station has gremlins running through their system.
-
We got very few drops of rain. That's too bad, since we could use it, but that's how things go sometimes.
@Torey The kids dragged & carried the canoe through the muddy field to get to a temporary long spring slough. They've been having lots of fun.
-
It's definitely the weather has gone crazy. We hit 44F degrees today. And now with the ten day forecast the lows are showing around 20 F degrees.
I guess that is probably good as it will keep us from swamping. We have a low area in our driveway, that I have videos of the first duck we had swimming in the lake the fast melting snow caused in our driveway.
-
@seeing a duck swimming in the driveway must have been crazy to see!
