Yucca cordage

This is about 200 ft of yucca cordage that I made from just a couple of handfuls of leaves/fronds! You can definitely tell the difference between the pounded and boiled leaves. The tender, inner leaves make a fiber almost as fine as linen when boiled.

This is a subject that really interests me. I don't have much knowledge or education in it yet. It is something I will probably pursue more when I am not at a stage of life where I'm constantly responsible for small children.
@judsoncarroll4 where is a good place to start to get a base education in cord making?

This lady has some great videos Sally Pointer - YouTube

Thank you @judsoncarroll4 it looks like there will be tons to learn from her!

That's very cool, Judson.
You should find a school that you can teach from. Or maybe start your own school of traditional skills?
-
THat is something I have considered.... maybe one day.

This is amazing. I love making cordage and never thought of Yucca. Love the you tube video

Nice rope!
My son made a cool rope out of bamboo.
I had a foraging teacher explain to me that you could basically make an entire garment with yucca.
The leaves make the thread, the tips make the needle to sew the fabric together and you can make a black dye from the seeds and even color your cloth/garment.
Pretty cool. I will probably do that one day when I care enough.

Thanks for the tip - I hadn't thought of making a dye with it.

Yw, Might be fun☺️

I know folks in my area have made fiber for cloth and rope from stinging nettle. Have not tried it yet, I need a few clones of myself to get to everything I need and want to do.
