    When I moved from Missouri to Washington, I was surprised to see how different the Pacific Dogwood was from the Flowering Dogwood back home. And I learned about the Red Osier Dogwood. I still think ours is prettier.

    NC has TONS! I do want to get some red osier dogwood growing soon for basket making and general relaxation...

    We have 5 species of Cornus listed in BC. C. nuttallii (Flowering dogwood, which is our provincial flower), C. stolonifera (Red Osier dogwood) and C. canadensis (bunchberry), while the other two are different species of bunchberry, dwarf bog bunchberry and Alaska bunchberry. Red Osier dogwood, or Red Willow as is it known by most First Nations in BC, is very common throughout my region. My plant atlas also indicates that in one mild climate area, C. sanguinea may have escaped cultivation.

    Red willow is used for basket-making here; often mixed in patterns with colours of true willow stems.

    Great medicine to have on hand for colds, fevers and coughs.

    I'm looking forward to growing some red dogwood - it is just planted ornamentally around here, so I can't pirate people's landscaping... although i have been tempted!
