Heads Up - Delay in Electronic Payments to IRS
I received form CP14 saying that my dad owes $417.00 and it is due by August 28th. But that amount was pulled by the IRS from his/my account on 04/14/23. So, I called the IRS and actually got through right away!
Turns out that some of the electronic payments made in April, May and June are in a “delayed status”, the Agent I spoke with is not sure why but can see that the payment was made and will not be charged any interest or penalty. He also said that I should get a letter saying it has been posted and if I do not hear is a couple of weeks, I can call back to get a status.

We got a letter probably 5 years ago saying we owed $36k. After we got over being shocked we called as well. Turns out someone keyed something in wrong and we didn't owe anything.

@kbmbillups1 that is sooooo scary, this is an Agency that can take everything away and to make such a huge mistake!
-
@Lisa K That is so true!! We had no idea how we would have paid that!

Update on the IRS letter, I was told by the first Agent I spoke to that I should receive a letter in a couple of weeks but did not and the deadline came & went.
So, I decided to call them this morning and I am glad I did, this Agent put me on hold to make some notes and update my dad’s file and said to give 6-8 weeks for the post to go through.
Turns out that he is accruing interest and penalties but once the payment is posted and back dated to 4/14/23 the interest and penalties will be erased. We shall see

@Lisa K how frustrating! With all the technology that we have I struggle to understand why things would need 6-8 weeks to go through.

@Michelle D my thought exactly!

Update 11/16/23
Well, I did not see anything from the IRS, so I called them again on 8/31/23 and was told by the Agent that yes they can see the payment and I was accruing interest but that should be taken care of in about 6-8 weeks.
Then on 10/19/23 I called again because I had not seen any communication from the IRS that the matter had been taken care of and the Agent again was able to see the payment and that there had been some activity within the last 24 hours, she then reversed out the interest and penalty.
On 10/30/23 I received a letter from the IRS saying that they approved to remove the “failure-to-pay penalty” just this one time because for a good past history. I did not like the implications of the letter, so on 10/31/23 I called again, this time it was the main department at the IRS (previously it had been the Collections department) and spoke with a 4th Agent. He said that because my dad was deceased that it fell into a category of “was it really supposed to be applied” which I do not understand since I signed the tax return and that is not what the first Agent stated. Any way I was on the phone with him for about 25 minutes while he worked on processing the payment. He said that a CP22 was coming and it was something he could not stop and that when it shows up, I do not need to respond to it and that it should be cleared up in about 8 weeks.
And yes, I have marked the 8 weeks on my calendar to call if I do not see anything saying it has been cleared up.

@Lisa K I'm so sorry that you are having to go through all of this headache. It all seems so unreasonable. I'm glad to see that you are handling it all in such a strong manner. Kudos to you!

Thanks @Michelle D 😊

@Lisa K Unbelievable----but went through something similar with my mom----wish they would reimburse us for all of the time we spend trying to clear things up! My husband said he thought I spent more time on getting that straight, than if was working a full-time job!
Hope it will be cleared up this time!

Thanks @water2world I so agree, it is like a having a full-time job! At least they can see the payment and I have proof when it was paid, but it will be nice once it is done.
