immediate need asthma

Right now I am realizing I may be in trouble. I am having a lot of asthma because of the smoke that has been in the air. I do not have a car today and doubt that I could get in to see the Doctor. What can I do at home.

I don't have any asthma medicine or an inhaler and can usually breath through whatever ails me. But not this time.

Does anyone have anything that might help me?? Please let me know. Herbal remedies?

    @judsoncarroll4 Can you help out?

@dipat2005 There are a number of links in this section about herbs for wildfire smoke. I am pretty sure that one of the more recent links contained information to do with asthma.

@shllnzl also posted a list of helpful herbs.

@dipat2005 Don't go outside. This is one time that I would recommend wearing a mask if you do have to go out (if you are able). You can see the particulate here on any surface outside; especially noticeable on vehicles.

If there is a lot of smoke in the air, you need to keep your windows closed. If you need to have them open because of heat, then hang a wet towel in the window. That will absorb some of the particulate that might be coming in.

These are suggestions if you don't have the type of asthma that is triggered by humid heat. If you have a humidifier, keep that going. If not, try a steambath (towel over the head over a steaming bowl). You could add any of: mint, thyme, oregano, lavender, chamomile or several other dried herbs or EOs to the bowl that will help open your air passages. There are inexpensive air purifiers that you can get for home use.

There are lots of suggestions for teas and tinctures in the Herbs for Wildfire Smoke discussion so you probably have at least one or two of them on hand. Mullein and thyme is pretty tasty as a tea. Add some ginger if you have it.

For emergencies, any combination of chewing a little tobacco, a small amount of lobelia in any form, strong coffee or black tea and or a little liquor is what I use. Each of these has probably saved my life before, along with or in lace of OTC antihistamines. The herbs Torey mentioned are very good. I especially like thyme as an expectorant.

Thanks everyone. I didn't have any of the herbs that were mentioned that anyone spoke about. Today I am clear and there is no asthma.

Amazing what a little bit of wind and no smoke will do. I appreciate all of the advice and will get some of the herbs mentioned (ones that I don't have allergies too.)

    I appreciate the quick advice!

I always wear a mask outside and keep the car windows rolled up. I have mostly been staying inside. My apartment has the old windows (double paned) (1970's). There is one room in my house that has a newer window and I often go into that room and stay for hours.

I'm glad you are feeling better, @dipat2005.

You should definitely have some of the herbal products mentioned on hand if you suffer from asthma or are bothered by air pollution, even occasionally.

@Torey Thanks for the tip about the wet towel. I'll keep that in mind. We've certainly been aware of the poor air some days. It's given hedgehog girl migraines at times & I can feel it in my breathing. Our windows have to stay open, so the towel advice is welcome.

One night when outside, we shone a flashlight upward. It was amazing how much was zipping by in the air. It was much more than it should be.

My birds seem to be doing okay. I always wonder how birds' delicate lungs deal with it all. My little serama rooster has been good too. I think his biggest neurological issues show when the farmer sprays, but it is compounded when there is smoke too.

@dipat2005 I'm glad you are doing better & will have the herbs available for next time. 😀

Its very hot and very smokey here today. 10+ on the air quality index. The sun is still poking through enough to make it hot. Not quite as hot as you @LaurieLovesLearning , but close at 33C.

The weather has been all over the map. Now we are around 80 degrees Centigrade and it is hovering between high 40's and low 50's Centigrade at night. I am not even opening the door or window in the morning and currently not using a fan.

I saw a comment on Grow Network forums about rubbing lobelia tincture on the chest to help with asthma symptoms.

Thanks @nicksamanda11 I would not have thought to do that.
