Favorite additions to mashed potatoes

I made some yummy mashed potatoes the other night with potato pearls. They can be made with water but I used less water and more 1/2 and 1/2 and added butter. They tasted really good.

What kinds of thingsdo you add to potatoes to make them yummy?

I like lots of garlic in my potatoes.

I boil garlic cloves with my potatoes (leave the skin on the potatoes, btw), then mash it all together with butter, milk, a spoonful or two of mayo, sour cream, bacon fat, cheese (preferably blue, swiss or parm), top with crumbled bacon and chives.

I had to google potato pearls. Never heard of them before.

I also boil garlic cloves in with the potatoes. Sour cream or heavy whipping cream are two choice additions along with extra butter. Crumbled bacon. Chives. Thyme. Black Pepper.

Sometimes I will cook parsnips in with the potatoes. Tones down the flavour of the parsnips for anyone not too fond of them. A pinch of nutmeg is excellent in this.

Has anyone ever had colcannon (mashed potatoes and cabbage)? I don't make it often (hubby doesn't like cooked cabbage) but I like it a lot.

Oh yum. I love eating potatoes and these all sound amazing!

I know of some people who will add cream cheese & a mix of onions & herbs to their mashed potatoes.

I absolutely love thick cream gravy on potatoes. 😋

garlic always works! Sometimes I'll mix in one or more other root vegetables to add a depth of flavor :)

Garlic and butter here too! Whipping cream or half and half too - whichever I have at the time!

I can almost taste the yummy goodness!

I have yet to meet a potato that I didn't like! Butter and bacon are my top add-ins. If I have it, I like cheddar cheese, sour cream, green onions, and/or garlic.

    Now I'm hungry ;-)

I have used olive oil, peanut butter (or other nut butters), sour cream, grated cheese of any type, pesto, and probably other things. Potatoes can accept a wide variety of toppings.

Also consider the Irish dish colcannon, a blend of mashed potatoes and chopped cabbage, with other greens optional.

So many delicious options here, And most of them I have tried. Have also topped baked potatoes with things like chili, taco meat, anything that you would use on a baked potato. Anything you would have in a Philly cheesesteak. BBQ pork, beef or chicken. Broccoli and/or cauliflower in a cheese sauce.

OK, we just had supper and now my mouth is watering and I'm craving potatoes.

@vickeym I think fried chorizo (or alternately, ground pork with your own spices) would also work well with potatoes. Chorizo and scrambled eggs is great!

Butter, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper are what i add to mashed peral potatoes. The key is to whisk with a fork for making small batches. Usually I use hot water yet milk may be added along with the hot water.

Add dried parsley, shredded cheese, chives and sour cream, roasted garlic and onions, green scallions and minced ham.

Oh my oh my---ready to go make mashed potatoes!

I have never tried boiling garlic with the potatoes ,but makes perfect sense!! I always add cheese (even cream cheese) and butter-- and sometimes a little milk. Today mine will be a bit different as I incorporate some of these ideas! YUM
