best cover in chicken run under coop that I have covered with landscaping material
Best cover in chicken run under coop that I have covered with landscaping material so prediters can not dig in. I was thinking contractors sand and diatomaceous earth and a dust area at back end. They will also have an extended grass run for day time when I am home.

We just placed a 2' skirt of hardware cloth on top of the ground around the perimeter of our coops/runs. The grass will grow through it and nobody except the digging predators will know the difference. It is much easier than digging down & just as effective to do it this way.

We buried hardware cloth under the ground to protect the enclosed chicken run.

Sadly, my chicken yard is void of anything green as they free range all day long...They eat everything in site.

Grass is cosmetic, not necessary.
We use 1/2" because of past digging rats.
We used to free range until we repeatedly lost lots of birds due to foxes. Sadly, that was the end of our preferred practice of free range birds.

This is basically what we did; we just created the apron out of 1/4-inch hardware cloth and then, instead of digging it down into the earth, covered the apron edge with lots of heavy rocks. (We're in the mountains, and big rocks is something we have LOTS of! :) ) It's worked great for going on three years now....

@Merin Porter back in your Texas days, have you ever seen armadillos dig? They are awesome at it and I had no idea!!! They dug a massive hole under our barn! Dug underneath several layers of cinder blocks. Ask @Linzi she saw it!

No, never saw them do that -- I had no idea, either! :o
