Anyone raise frogs?
I love frog legs! I eat a lot of them, fried, a la Creole, in various sauces, etc... Usually, I go out frog gigging and harvest from the wild. But, I'm taking care of a family member right now and the waters where she lives are very not clean.... golf courses and an old Monsanto super fund site... So, I went to a seafood dealer and bought some, farm raised for $8 a pound! I think I seriously need to get into raising frogs next year! I found an old Mother Earth News article online: https://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/frog-farming-zmaz78jazgoe. But, I'd sure appreciate any advice from folks here, who do it. How are your ponds constructed... depth, size, etc. What do you feed them? Has anyone tried black soldier fly larvae feeders? How do you process and market them? etc, etc. Ideally, I'd like to do it in a Permaculture model of aquaculture - growing various plants, critters and such with the frogs.
Thanks!

BTW, $8 for a pound was 3 sets of big bullfrog legs... that is $8 for frozen meat from 3 frogs..... so that is what the market demands in NC... that sure beats chicken per pound! Gosh, if I could get that for a pastured broiler! That is also more than double what farm raised catfish was selling for, and most catfish is being raised like CAFO chicken these days. So, yeah, I need to look into frog farming!

It has possibilties, my daddy grew up in central NC during the depression and froglegs were a delicacy to him. Good luck.

An aside... it always bugs me when people say "it tastes like chicken". Frog legs have more the texture and taste of chicken than most things.... but even that is just a hint. They taste more like fresh water fish, but richer.... if you like fish or chicken, frog legs are dream come true - tender, mild, buttery, meaty, not overly fishy, clean tasting, good smelling. Y'all let me know if you want recipes!
