Citrus for zone 8b?
I'm not sure yet, but I am considering moving down the mountain... all the way down to USDA Hardiness Zone 8b. It seems the recommendation for most citrus is no colder than zone 9... So, can anyone recommend some good varieties for 8b? Or, can you recommend some strategies to, as David The Good says, "push the zone".... half a zone should be that big a deal... heck, Sepp Holzer grows citrus in the Alps! Am I correct in thinking that some deep mulch and a sunny, wind protected location would probably be sufficient?

Hi, I'm not sure, but this year I started this discussion: 'Pushing the zone': who has grown tropical & similar delights... Can you find anything in there ?

This is a link to a forum at UBC Botanical Gardens in Vancouver where there are a lot of very interesting discussions about growing citrus; which types and varieties have worked in different climates, etc., from people who have actually grown citrus in areas that are pushing the zones. .

Calamondins are a more cold hardy citrus, and easy to grow too. I I've mentioned them on a couple different post, as I have a potted one I love. They are small and very sour, but also very juicy with delicious aromatic peel. Excellent for cooking.
I just did a quick online search, and several sources said they can grow in zone 8. This seems to be a decent overview.

One of our neighbors (in the Ozarks) had several of these in their yard. I picked some and had no idea how to use them so I sliced and dried them. They were fragrant and made a nice potpourri. According to this article, when prepared properly they can be a useful fruit. http://www.eattheweeds.com/hardy-orange/
