Wow, sardines are good!
Honestly, I don't know why I have to keep having this revelation.... But, every time I eat a good quality brand of canned sardines, I'm amazed just how good they are! I just had some, dressed with a little mustard vinaigrette, and some dill pickles on the side.... even better is ON a Caesar salad. But, best may be simply served over buttered rice!

Funny! I grew up on sardines and find the taste unique and delicious. So I don’t understand why many people turn up their noses. But I admit since I try to grow my own or buy local food I haven’t been eating them. Maybe I will pick up some this week, thanks!

My daughter and I sneak them right out of the can and plop them on crackers- but alone, because no one else in the family enjoys them. :)

I've come to love sardines. 2 flavours come to mind, sea salt and rosemary, lemon and chilli. Love them with salad in a wrap. A very underated snack and healthy too!

I've tried the expensive, imported brands of fancy sardines and they are amazing, but I've really gotten hooked on an inexpensive domestic brand, Polar. It is very good quality compared to the others on the shelf. The sardines are so nice that they display them through the lid. These are not the mush, gray ones in tin cans. These are nice little fish!

I am trying to acquire a taste for sardines since I know how nutritious they are. Any other suggestions for how to slip them into my diet. Will definitely be trying the mustard suggestion. Thank you.

Sure, two suggestions. The first comes via the great George L. Herter's advice in his classic "Bull Cook". Soak them for a few minutes in your favorite vinegar before eating. That reduces the oil and gives them a lighter, fresher taste. The second is a real treat - leave the oil on but roll them in cracker crumbs with a little dry parsley and pan fry them in olive oil until brown... let them crisp up on a rack or paper. Sometimes I like to make a little mustard vinaigrette dipping sauce, and have some dill pickles on the side, but just a little lemon juice is best - I can eat those like potato chips!

My husband discovered a recipe for a sardine spread (for crackers and such), where they are combined with avocado, garlic, shallots, etc.... SO good!!!

My husband was a bachelor for several years, he had some unique ways of eating sardines. The most notorious was sardine and peanut butter sandwiches with plenty of onions. He would pack that in his lunches and clear out the truck when lunchtime rolled around. I heard about those sandwiches from everyone that knew him before we got married, LOL

I tried some today soaked in balsamic vinegar and they weren’t bad. My vi gear to sardine ratio was pretty high but I think this could work...thank you!

I like to eat them on salads with some good quality smoked balsamic vinegar. I also like them just plain out of the can. I think I'll try the recipe you posted @judsoncarroll4 for frying them. Where do you get the Polar brand of sardines???

Our local Food Lion grocery stores carry them. I think my favorite vinegar to use is rice wine.

I rediscovered sardines as an adult but more recently discovered an even more amazing way to eat them - lightly pan-fried. OMG!
Just a little olive oil (or whatever oil they come with in the can). Medium heat for a 2-3 of minutes per side - a bit more if you like them crispy. They're a bit hard to flip. Press them down a bit with a spatula to flatten.

My favorite snack....sardines, mustard, a slice of cheese on a CHick "n Bisquit cracker......Totally wonderful. I know othat the crackers aren't the best but for a treat....

I buy sardines packed in water with salt. I get the cheapest brand at Shoprite. When eating them, I drain out the water - or give it to my cat. I add the sardines to a complicated salad I make almost daily from plants I grow and things I buy, such as onion, carrot, nuts, flowers, greens, radishes, hummus, guacamole, etc. I mush it all up together and that pretty much disguises the taste of sardines. I get all the nutrition and I don't worry about the taste.

Try as I might, I've never really liked fish, except for the crappie my grandpa caught and filleted thin. Granny would salt and pepper them, and roll them in milk and the cornmeal and fry them up crispy in lard in a cast iron skillet.
I know they are good for me, and I might be able to eat them fried. But those eyes...

Crappie is hard to beat! I love the fresh water pan fish.... bluegill, bream, perch, etc. Don't get me started - I could go on for well over a thousand words about cane pole fishing and the virtues of watching a bit of cork from a grassy bank.

I looked online and they were being sold for $35 a can. Wow! I'm hoping it was a typo. The other places I looked were out of stock.

I'm not a huge fan of them alone...but, I love to cook with them and use them as my unami ingredient!

I use them that way, too - anything where anchovies may be too salty.

My dad and I used to eat them out of the can. He would put mustard on them for us.
I think I'll give your brand a try as the others never look even tempting to me...my cats sure like them though.

I love sardines. I made sardine cakes for breakfast last week; they came out very tasty. I used a can of water-packed sardines, drained and smashed, a beaten egg, a large handful of gluten-free breadcrumbs(enough to absorb the moisture from the egg),3 large finely diced green onions,and some seasonings( I think garlic powder, celery salt, and italian seasoning. Not necessarily my first choice, but it worked. I was visiting my cousin and was at the mercy of her spice cabinet.) The green onion is was makes it, I think. Pan fry in coconut oil until brown on both sides.
I have an Indian recipe I love to make with sardines, but that will be a separate post.

It took me awhile to acquire a taste for sardines. But, now I love them. My favorite way to eat them with a splash of hot sauce on crackers. I find they are a great pick-me-up after a strenuous workout or over exerting myself in the yard!

I grew up on sardines and would eat them right out of the can. My favorite way is to squeeze fresh lemon juice all over them and eat them with crackers thanks to my Italian Grandfather. They give me great energy at lunch time

I appreciate all the suggestions for ways to enjoy sardines. I have always eaten them straight out of the can and loved every bite. It can alienate folks in the same room, however... THANK YOU, @judsoncarroll4 for the Polar recommendation and telling us where to look for them.

Well isn't this an interesting lil thread! I didn't grow up on them and don't even know if I've ever tried one. You've piqued my interest so I think I'll go out and buy a can. If I don't like them, no worries, I'll just bury them in my garden and watch how the lucky plants are that get to benefit off the nutrients!

I grew up eating them. I've since acquired a taste for quality and wild caught and I still can eat them right out of the can.
two funny stories:
I remember coming home very mad at my dad, I think I was about 12 or 13. I yelled at him 'why didn't you tell me that all of the things we eat are gross!' He of course laughed and told me it's only gross to them. (he and I could also sit and eat half a tube of braunschweiger with mayo on crackers)
My husband said he fell in love with me on our fist date because I ordered smelt (basically fresh water sardines) He had never since a woman willing to eat them.
I guess it pays to eat the gross stuff.
