Tutorial: Adding Tags to a New Discussion
I am posting this tutorial to give members instruction on how to include tags in a new discussion post.
Tags are meant to help find a particular discussion more readily when a search is performed.
1. Just below the box where you type the post of a new discussion, there is a box that says "Tags" above it. Type a specific word that reflects the content of your post in there, for example, if your post is about a particular grass & its medicinal use "quack grass", "grass", "medicinal", "medicine" would work well. Each term needs to be put in separately (see #2). It is good to use a key word that is in your post or title. I have learned that up to 5 terms seems to be optimal.
2. After typing one term, click just above the box, and you will notice that inside the box will be your term surrounded by a bubble of sorts, with a little "x" with it. The "x" is how you can delete that tag if it isnt a word that you want to keep.
These will show near the bottom of the initial discussion post.
3. Hashtags (#) are not necessary to post an effective tag on the TGN forum.
Again, tags are meant to assist a search. If someone is looking for something and they want a specific term to appear in posts searched for, the posts tagged with that term will appear in their results.

@LaurieLovesLearning Thank you for the tutorial. It is good to know how to help people with their searches by adding tags. Your tags for this post include tags and tag. Would a search for tag pull up everything in the tag search plus the items without a s on tag?
-
@tomandcara To be honest, I don't know. Maybe you could try it out & post here? It is a good question.
-
@LaurieLovesLearning Search for tag includes items from tags as well. Search for tags included fewer items. At least that seems to be what I could see from the 2 searches.

Interesting. Thanks for checking it out and posting it here.
Some sites really don't have great searches & are not specific enough in their results. I haven't seen tags on those, so I am not sure why it is so.
I have had good results here, but never checked out something so little such as the addition/not of a little thing such as one letter.

Thank you for the welcome education.

Thanks so much @LaurieLovesLearning
I was wondering how do do tags...
-
@Leediafastje & @Marjory Wildcraft You are most welcome.
I updated the tutorial slightly. I noticed that a few members had used hashtags, but these are not necessary for the tag to be effective.

SO, I am guessing the tagging happens only with a brand new post/topic, correct? I am new to this forum, so I don't have any experience of how the system works. I appreciate specific guidance so I don't have to fumble around, experimenting my way through it. THANKS.

@Nancy A.Maurelli Great question! You are correct that most tagging happens when a discussion thread is first created -- although if you are the author of the discussion, you can also go back and edit your previously published post title, content, and/or tags by clicking on the "gear" icon at the top right of the post.

I really needed this. I need all the help I can get to learn hope to maneuver this site. Don’t want to post into Space and get lost. Thx

Thank you for the tutorial - I am especially fond of the tip of 5 tags - whew! I could see myself going down the rabbit hole of thikging of everything applicable. Always taught the more the merrier for websites; so easier for the netowrk - so greatly appreciated!

@Elizabeth Voss Welcome here! I am glad that the tutorial helped.
I think that I read that the boys (or whatever...I am not overly techy) only pick up on the first 5 anyway, so they should be the best words. Any extras are just that, and not so useful. This keeps things tidy and less stressful. ;)
