Victorian pharmacy 1906
Oooooh, look what I found!
How better than to make your own medicine than with The National Formulary from 1906? You could set up your own Victorian pharmacy in your kitchen!

but where can we source the cocaine? 🤣
(that was actually a joke, in a way, but cocaine, and opium, were commonly found in medicines back then).
-
Not sure on the coke... but another book, entitled Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests has the info on the opium. Seriously. When the South was blockaded and couldn't get any imports, the Confederacy hired a French botanist to to find every food, medicine, fiber, etc use for all plants that grew or could be grown in the South. It is an incredible book - you can find it on archive.

An herbalist by another name...

@judsoncarroll4 that sounds seriously excellent (the book). Thank you!
-
What's the book called? I'd love to read that one!
-
-
Gosh, guess doctors didn't write legibly back then either! (top of page 12)
-
@judsoncarroll4 you find the neatest things. Thank you for sharing this.
-
This is quite the treasure. Thanks for sharing the link. I was in a used book store a few years ago and came across a book called "Materia Medica for Nurse" from 1919. I had to pay the exorbitant price of $24 which is way more than I have ever spent on a used book. But so very worth it.
-
Wow, I love the Internet Archive. Thank you for this @judsoncarroll4
-
Wow! Thank you! For all these resources.

Here is another good one https://archive.org/details/mercks1901manual00merc

And this one
-
Neat...but at first glance they don't seem to indicate what all this stuff is for!? Like caffeine, sodium salicylate, and alcohol made into a paste? Huh? :-)
-
check the last couple of books in this topic
-
Thank you! Will do!
-
Thank you this is very neat!
-
@judsoncarroll4 Thanks so much for the archive link. I had a blast looking through all the stuff they had under knitting. Lots of things to browse through.
-
Love this, so many good books free to read online!
-
Sometimes I just like to have a copy. Amazon sells a reprint https://www.amazon.com/Resources-Southern-Forests-Economical-Agricultural/dp/1345207077/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

@water2world Welcome to the TGN forum!
-
I went on a weed walk with Darryl Patton and he recommended this book.
-
I hope I can find time to read this, but am afraid if it is night reading, I won't make it very far into the book.

Lots of really cool herbal and formulary books. Michael Moore has some really wonderful ones on his website that can be downloaded, too.
-
This is very cool. :) I saw on youtube a couple weeks ago where they recreated a Victorian Pharmacy and even tried to make some of the medicines that would have had back then. They talked about how opium was used extensively along with arsenic I believe. The channel is called Absolute History. Thank you for sharing the book. I look forward to reading it.

@Jenny Talbott Welcome to TGN's forum!
I watched a series that had that idea as one of their episodes. I believe that it was a part of programming from the BBC. It was very interesting.
-
@LaurieLovesLearning Was that the series with Ruth Goodman? We have so many fond memories of those living history programs--they were our homeschool treat when we were sick.
-
The Victorian Pharmacy is a 4 episode series. And yes, it has Ruth Goodman as one of the main characters.
There are other series. I really enjoyed watching them.
The Victorian Kitchen; where they use an 19th century cookbook and period kitchen tools & equipment. The kitchen complete with a big wood range and wood fired brick ovens.
The Victorian Farm; 5 (I think) episodes over the course of a year's farming using Victorian techniques and farm equipment.
The above shows were filmed at or near Blists Hill Victorian Village.
The Victorian Kitchen Garden. 13 part series.
The Victorian Flower Garden.
-
@Annie Kate Yes, it was! They made a few very excellent series focused on accurate historical information, and actually tried to live in those ways that they experimented with. Our family really enjoyed all of them.
They are YouTube. If you search using the terms below, you can find many of the shows (Victorian/Farm/Castle ones) for free on this playlist.
"Farm Series with Ruth Goodman, Genevieve Angel"
They were listed in the online The Knowledge Channel listings based out of BC at the time, last I checked. The channel & app can be found here: https://www.knowledge.ca

@LaurieLovesLearning Thank you for you kind welcome. I'm excited to be here. And a bit overwhelmed. So much great information and so little time. And that's just in the forums. 😊
