How do you separate the slimy strings from the pumpkin and squash seeds for planting in the spring?
Is there a better way to separate the pumpkin and squash seeds for planting than putting it in a colander and rubbing the seeds together?

@roytg94 you can ferment the seeds for 2 days in a bit of water and rinse afterwards.
Makes it a lot easier.

Did not know that. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Since I'm usually saving them for myself and not for sale, I dry the seeds with the goop that sticks and call it fertilizer.

@Tave ,,,,Yeah, I do that too--the goop gets crumbly when dry anyway. But I wonder if fermenting the squash seeds helps with germination, the way it does with tomatoes? Different plant family, and one squash gives you so many seeds usually more than enough germinate, so maybe that is a non-issue. Would be interesting to know though.

@MaryRowe I've never had an issue with germination either way. Sometimes I throw the seeds straight from the squash into the scrap bucket, then, when the bucket is full, dig a small pit and bury the scraps with the seeds. Those are the ones that have done the best.
