Interesting article on cotton

I grew two plants once. I had to move them indoors due to our very short season. I was able to grow it until it had the ball & seeds. I was so excited! What beautiful flowers they have!
For me, it was an interesting experience.

I start mine early indoors and then move them out. They are a real joy to watch and grow
And its funny as people who come to look at the gardens, state and ask, "Is it Cotton?"
Growing cotton in your zone would definitely be challenging and fun @LaurieLovesLearning

Cotton is also a very medicinal herb... it increases oxytocin. The bark of cotton is the sexual tonic most people are looking for.
-
@judsoncarroll4 but it is also an abortifactant (I think that's the term).
@Denise Grant I am pretty sure I started it early too. I no longer order any seeds from the catalogue that I got the first seeds from.
But...I wanted to try it. My first year wasn't so great. I did better trying it in my second year.
Maybe I will have to see if I can get it again.

Well, it turns out it probably isn't... Although classified as an abortifacient, it has never been proven such in clinical studies. Actually, it probably does the opposite! But, of course, it shouldn't be used in pregnancy in case there is some truth to it.

I bought seeds to try growing a little this year! It turns out I’m in cotton country, so I thought it would be fun. I had no idea it was medicinal. Time for lots more research.

Some inspiration

Is it an aphrodisiac?

I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and cotton was a very big deal there. Fields of cotton, really beautiful. The first bale of cotton was displayed at the "big Bank" it was kind of a party atmosphere, free snacks and kids were given some dried cotton bols as souvenirs. I am sure this custom is long gone but we always looked forward to the first bale.

In a way. Oxytocin is the hormone stimulated by any kind of affection - it is the happy/feel good/loved hormone. And cotton root bark enhances engorgement of erectile tissue in both sexes.

Cotton was big around here, too. It made a tiny little town in SC home to more millionaires than anywhere else per capita. NAFTA changed all that and now most of those mansions are abandoned... it is a very sad town.

That's cool! How is the best way to take it? Capsul? Powder, tincture?

Wow! How about @karenjanicki if the best way to take advantage of this plant's properties was to just wear it?
-
Not for this purpose, but think........... linen

I think the reason that cotton is listed as a possible abortificant is because oxytocin increases uterine contractions. Given during labour, this can speed things up for someone experiencing a slow progression. If taken at other times during pregnancy, this could possibly cause contractions strong enough to initiate premature labour resulting in a miscarriage (abortion).
Its a great medicine but I would always advise against using it during pregnancy just to be on the safe side.
Something important to note from the article. I see cotton has now been genetically modified to be able to withstand glyphosate. So it enters the list of Round-up Ready plants Monsanto is inflicting on the world. If you are buying seeds make sure they are not Round-up Ready.
-
@torey I just started a new discussion on glyphosate since you mentioned it.. I'm hoping to find the hour plus vid I watched last eve regarding glyphosate, our crops and cancer...if I can find it again I'll post it but it's done by the guy who wrote the book listed in the 'endangered species' disussion I just listed.. pretty sure you will find it interesting.

That's fascinating! I had no idea that it had so many valuable uses. Thank you for sharing!

I do enjoy wearing cotton. I'm also interested in the medicinal applications of many plants as a hobby herbalist.
