A lesson from our dog Rex

This morning our dear dog Rex died, at home with us. He had cancer, and we had a huge lump removed last fall so he could live his last few months well, and he did.

Just two days ago he was running after the neighbors with his tail in a happy curl. Even on bad days, he wouldn't mope about being sick or sore but would chase squirrels, bring us sticks to throw, and 'protect' the yard from snowmobiles from behind the fence.

I've been thinking about how he lived with his illness, and how much humans can learn from dogs. Just live as much as possible, don't think about being ill (he had no choice, but we do), and keep on enjoying as much as possible. How much extra suffering we bring on ourselves by thinking about being ill and worrying about the end!
