Well, this is a new one..... a stoned squirrel
I thought the wobbly, lethargic squirrel on my porch might be rabid.... turns out he had just dug up and eaten all the prickly poppy seeds I planted yesterday!!!!

I wonder if he will return for more. Hopefully you don't have an addict on your hands.
-
THose seeds are way too expensive - he had better not!
-
Do you have a way to protect them from it once in the ground?
-
I'll start the next batch indoors and transplant
-
Who would have thought a squirrel could get stoned, hhhmmm.
-
He was definitely feeling no pain for a couple of hours.
-
We have seen some crazy squirrel behavior around here but I don't think I have ever seen one stoned before. That would be interesting. I have been fighting with squirrels digging up and eating the corn I plant. That isn't anywhere near as entertaining. I guess I will start my corn inside going forward.
-
I had that problem a couple of years ago. I had to put little tinfoil or toilet paper roll collars around each little plant.
-
Let's hope the squirrel doesn't get the munchies 😃
-
Okay, that's really different...
I spotted a small red squirrel today that disappeared into a gap between the furnace chimney and the house. I can see where the seal has been sort of pulled back. I'll have to figure out how to close that off, as I already have issues with mice and squirrels getting into the attic!
-
Yeah, they can cause problems!
-
Oh my! Hope the little blighter doesn't remember where he got his "treats".
-
If he does, I'll be cooking poppy seed flavored roast squirrel!
-
A lady at the store told me to sprinkle crushed pepper in when planting my bulbs and the squirrels won't dig them up. Wonder if the same would work with poopy seeds.
-
Amendment (as hillarious as that was) Poppy seeds
This may work with corn too. It's worth a try. Crushed pepper flakes are relatively cheap- especially if you grow and make your own.
-
I did that a couple of years ago with my corn, when the squirrels where just cutting it off after sprouting for no reason. It only worked a day or two. You really do have to trap or shoot them and eat them.
-
We actually did this with chicken feed that the squirrels were getting into. Apparently chickens don't have the receptors needed to be affected by cayenne, but the squirrels sure seemed to. Fixed our problem with a quickness...
-
@judsoncarroll4 Squirrels are one of the few game animals that can be legally hunted year round. :-)
-
I read an article about pouring hot sauce and/or hot pepper in their burrows, I did both and it seemed to get rid of them. A good rainy season also did a good job too.
-
@judsoncarroll4 Thanks for the visualization! Gave me a much needed chuckle!
-
@Lisa K How did you _find_ their burrows? I'm drowning in squirrels, but I always see them disappear into the trees when I get close.
Maybe you have a different squirrel species?
-
There are ground squirrels and tree squirrels - two different species, both called the same name depending where you live/
-
I have Ground squirrels which are very lazy, they would use gopher exit holes.
