The FIRST egg
We got our first egg!!! There is such a difference between an egg and an egg!!! One buys eggs from the shop or the farmer. Fine. But when our hen which we bought 20 days ago finally laid its first egg - wow- it is such a difference. We bought two beautiful Amrock hens. They are turning into tame ones. Slowly.

That's always exciting, finding the first egg! Just wait until you actually see one in the process of laying. Each of our kids has "caught" a fresh egg or two from a hens back end.
May you be blessed with many more!
How many hens do you have?
-
@jowitt.europe how exciting! Congratulations! I can't wait until my new ladies are laying.
-
It never get tiring when a chicken lays its first egg!
-
@LaurieLovesLearning oh, I thought one should not disturb hens while they are laying. My grandchildren will stay during the summer holidays. I wonder whether they will catch this moment. For the time being the hens are still very shy. I have two and I have ordered two more. I will get them when they are 7 weeks old. So before summer we will have 4 all in all. The eggs will be for me and my husband and the family when they stay with us, but that is not more than 2 months a year, thus, I think, 4 hens is enough. If not, we buy more. I love them 😍

@Michelle D how old are your new ladies by now?
-
@jowitt.europe they are still very young about 5 weeks old. It will still be a few months before we see our first eggs.
-
@jowitt.europe How exciting!! I can't wait until we have chickens.......then eggs!!
-
How exciting @jowitt.europe!
-
Congratulations on your first egg. I miss having chickens even though we get our eggs from a neighbor.
-
This is always so fun -- I got to experience this for a second time when I got blue egg layers for the first time after having only brown egg layers for a while. Finding that first blue egg in the nest was exciting! I felt like that again when we hatched our first chicks. I think I ran back into the house to announce it to the kids -- "We got chicks! We got chicks!" Woo hoo!
-
The hen was not disturbed in any way. Its bottom was pointing toward them in such a way, all they needed to do was place their hand underneath to catch the egg.
-
We do this every year for every hatch inside & out. 😄
-
Congrats on the 1st egg!!! I’m sure you’ll have pinups (photos) added to the walls where your girls are so the grandchildren can see them progress.
-
So exciting getting that first egg, I remember it fondly @jowitt.europe. I can't wait until we're able to get chickens again.😊
Your ladies are beautiful.😍

In the meantime my hens became very selective concerning the place where they lay. It was very hot, so they prefer laying outside. I have to spy to find their preferred places…
-
My isa browns are 16 weeks old so we are keeping a look out for first eggs from them. I'm wondering how much they will cooperate with laying where we want them to or if we will have to search for eggs also.
-
@Michelle D What some people do is put either plastic or ceramic eggs or even golf balls in the nests where they want them to lay. Still others put the hens into the nests with after placing those in the place. This is supposed to give a huge hint that it is a preferred place to lay.
Then, you wait & see.
As well, if a hen disappears, you either have a predator or a hen has gone broody. I don't thing Isas go broody very often though. I don't think mine ever did.
-
@LaurieLovesLearning I have light brown ceramic eggs in 2 of the 4 nest boxes. Should I put something in the other 2 also or is that enough to give them the hint?
-
@Michelle D I would think that should be enough.
-
I will try with a plastic or wooden egg. We created a new laying place out of a bucket which we hang on the wall. So far they did not use it.
-
Congratulations!!! I wish you many more! 😀
-
I just got my first egg from my isa browns! They are 17 weeks old so it is a bit small but I'm so excited.
The ceramic eggs worked perfectly. She knew exactly where to go to lay.
-
Congratulations! That's so exciting, @Michelle D !
-
@Michelle D how wonderful! I am still waiting for the first eggs from my new ones.
