My whittling so far

Have you thought of what you're wanting to try your new knife on yet, @judsoncarroll4?😊
-
Probably some Celtic knot patterns... we'll see. I have practiced with it a little and found the way of holding it I prefer, so that is a start.
-
@judsoncarroll4 I would love to see that!
-
Ooo, I'm sure that'll be beautiful! Can't wait to see it.😁
-
Thanks, I'll look into those.
-
This is my first attempt at chip carving - LOTS of room for improvement, but Happy New year!
-
That's awesome, @judsoncarroll4!😁
Happy New Year!🎊🎉
-
Love it! Happy New Year!
-
@judsoncarroll4 there are many varieties, do you recommend a certain brand?
-
Of what?
-
Happy New Year to you also. It looks great @judsoncarroll4

Our teen son just came up from the basement with this in hand. His first spoon. It was inspired by Thomas Elpel's video that I posted about lately.
Our daughter bought herself a whittling book with many projects and he is allowed to use the book for now. He doesn't know it yet, but he will get another whittling/woodworking book for his birthday. Right now it is tucked away. 😄
-
He did pretty well on his first project, @LaurieLovesLearning. 😊
-
that is so great! And a super good thing our kids don't read the forums 🤗
-
@Marjory Wildcraft They don't do much online. I pass on important things that I find for them to learn (history, science, herbalism, etc.) and we watch and learn together. I don't want them to get addicted to a screen. We want them to move & explore, not sit.

This spatula is far from perfect, but I learned more from this project than any before. It is from the last knotty, twisted, curvy piece of dogwood I had. It was dry and harder than previous pieces. I had not yet learned to axe out a blank, so this was mostly done with a knife and a bit with a gouge. It took a month due to being so hard - I had bad wrist and forearm inflammation. But, I finally got something that will flip a burger, and I am happy with balance and feel!
-
That's impressive, @judsoncarroll4! Great job!😁
-
@LaurieLovesLearning & @judsoncarroll4 Very nice job on both items!
As soon as my hand finishes healing I have got to get started trying whittling. I have wanted to for a long time, I need to find some time and just get started.
-
Thanks - one thing I would advise is not to try to do it all with a knife. Most Swedish and British carvers do most of the work with a campa axe, leaving just the finer details to the knife. Most Americans use a bandsaw. I hate bandsaws and anything loud. I use a coping saw when a saw is needed.
-
@judsoncarroll4 Thanks for the heads up. I don't own a bandsaw so no issue there. Will look up what a campa axe is. Do you use a vise of some type to hold the piece while you use the coping saw?
-
Oops, I meant camp axe or hatchet. I use a C clamp when necessary witht he coping saw.
-
@judsoncarroll4 it looks great! Thank you for sharing what you learned from the experience.
