I was just looking up flax seed and the article talked about how to use flax seed meal to make egg substitutes: https://dontwastethecrumbs.com/how-to-make-flax-egg/.

Also 18 ways to use Flaxseed: https://dontwastethecrumbs.com/ways-use-flaxseed/.

I have used it in baking before but never thought about using it in smoothies.

How do you use flaxseed:? Are there are other tutorials on Flaxseed that you use?

Flaxseed is best when the whole seeds are ground in a coffee/spice grinder. Using ground flax allows the body to easily absorb them. @dipat2005

I use a little in my smoothies and in hot cereal. Can also sprinkle it over yogurt and bake with it.

My hair gets really thick and healthy when I remember to use it regularly.

@SuperC thanks! @Linda Bittle I love the comment about the hair-thanks! My hair actually grows fast but it is lacking in regrowing.

These are good ideas (the 18 ways). I wouldn't have thought about putting flax in hummus.

Another tip. Flaxseed should be as freshly ground as possible so don't grind too much at one time.

I make my own granola and I always include flaxseed. And just like @Linda Bittle I put it in smoothies, on yogurt, and in tons of baking.

I will probably try it in my hummus next time I make some. That sounds like it would be worth a try.

Flax is a good source of omega 3 fats, so it's good to get it into your diet somehow. I haven't tried it in hummus, but it should work well in baked goods such as on bread.

How much flaxseed would you use for a one egg substitute?

Another way to make egg-free "eggs" is ground plantain seed. 1 Tbsp ground seeds to 2.5 Tbsp water. Plantain grows wild just about everywhere, so free egg-free eggs.

@SuperC In the article in the original post, it says to use 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed to 2 Tbsp water. There are directions in a video link where you can watch the whole process.

I use ground flax seed for quite a bit of cooking for thickening. I get the already ground flax seed and keep it in the freezer once the bag is opened. May not be the best, but it does make it more convenient.

I grind a big batch and store in the freezer. I find I'm more apt to use it if it's ready to go.

I was storing my in the cupboard. I guess that wasn't a good idea. I will put mine in the freezer too!

@dipat2005 My husband puts ground flax seed in his cereal every morning. He says "he has to have his flax"

I made flaxmeal muffins one time for the kids. They absolutely loved them. It was a snowy day and we sledded, baked, and ate muffins until our hearts were content! I added mix-ins of various kinds too. Choc chips, raisins, etc.

@nicksamanda11 do you have a recipe that you would be willing to share?

Here's an article with 15 egg subs, and the instructions for flax seed (#5) say this:

    Flax Seeds + Warm Water

Have you ever heard the term "flax egg" or maybe you've seen it referred to as "flegg." No matter what you call it, this swap is a no brainer. When the ground flax seeds and water combine, it creates a thick mixture that's similar in texture to eggs.

    1 tablespoon finely ground flax seeds + 3 tablespoons warm water + 10 minutes = 1 egg

@Linda Bittle I saw a similar one about eggs. It said to substitute just `1 egg (only add 1) for a cake mix. Now if you made your cake from scratch it might take some experimenting.

@nicksamanda11 yes please share a recipe for Flaxseed Muffins. Also be sure to share the amounts of the add ins.
