We have two species of Myrica here in BC; M. gale and M. californica. Sweetgale is quite common all along the coast right up to the Aleutians but can also be found inland in many places as far north as beyond the Arctic Circle in both Canada and Alaska. California Bayberry is quite rare in BC, only found in a few locations on Southwestern Vancouver Island.

I've never gathered it or used it, though.

The formula mentioned by Jethro Kloss has been promoted by Dr. Christopher as his Composition Powder but he studied at Dominion Herbal College (in Vancouver, BC) so that is where he learned it.

I see they are messing with the names again and Myrica californica might now be Morella californica. Aaaggghhh!

Yes, I wish they would stop doing that! I always worry that as soon as I get a book published the names of the plants will change.
