Know your dandelion ID
Below you will see two different dandelion look-a-likes. Their medicinal properties are much different than Taraxacum officinale. I think the first would certainly give you cotton mouth and both would taste nothing like what you would expect a dandelion to taste like. I'm not sure of the Latin name for these, but consider…

Silverweed
I found this plant on the edge of a parking lot a few days ago. I think next time we are in the area, I will dig a plant up & bring it home. I really dont think the business will miss a "weed." All parts are edible, but I still need to find out if it is safe for livestock & how invasive it might be (it spreads by rhizomes).

Lazy spring foraging in the pasture
We took a couple hours this afternoon to go through our pasture to forage. If spraying doesn't happen around our place tomorrow, we'll go out again & see what we can get. We have plenty of all of these right now because nobody is out on this piece of pasture just yet. We will be making a note of that...not until the…

Fried dandelion buds
Fried dandelion buds Another recipe from my spring workshop. Fried dandelion buds. They were absolutely delicious. We collected a handful of dandelion closed buds. I washed them and patted dry. Then we roasted a chopped onion in butter, added the buds to the frying pan and a bit of herbal salt and let them fry for a few…

Sapping season
It looks like we could get a full two weeks of perfect sapping weather. Our maples are Manitoba maples. Our sap to syrup ratio is 40:1. We put in almost all of our spiles today. We ran out of buckets & lids. We are trying to figure out what we might have that can be fill in collection containers. Right now we have about 20…

Cottonwood buds
The electric company is cutting down a huge cottonwood tree in my neighbor's yard. It's just a couple of feet from MY yard, and they're working from my yard. I mourn the big tree. But I'm hoping I can harvest a bunch of cottonwood buds to make medicine. I know they'll haul off the limbs and brush but they can't get them…

Conifer & Ginger Ice Cream
I took the liberty of renaming this particular recipe in the header box to more clearly state that more than one tree can be used. I want to post this particular one (ice cream) in dairy since that is where I've been posting the various ice cream recipes I've been finding. I will also cross post this link under Wild…

Winter Foraging
I have read this before. It is a good reminder that foraging can be done year round, and a good refresher to read over the list. I want to do some plant foraging walks with our small homeschool group in different seasons. We are at the very beginning planning stages for activities right now, but this is certainly one that…

What do you do with rose hips?
I have recently collected quite a few beautiful, red, fat rose hips. I know there is a lot of work to clean them - get rid of seeds and tiny hair inside the hips. I also know that they are very rich of vitamin C and, especially during autumn are great to strengthen the immune system. How do you prepare and preserve rose…

Tincturing Hawthorn & Use for Thorns
From a knowledgeable First Nations member: https://dakotaplants.wordpress.com/2022/09/13/tincturing-hawthorn/ These obviously are now ready in my general area. I'm not sure what she means by not plentiful on the prairies, because I know of many locations to find hawthorns, but maybe I'm a little closer to the Canadian…
