Plant stress
I have noticed all kinds of plant stress working in greenhouse and doing landscaping. Even in your backyard understanding plant stress and know what to look for can help save a garden plant, shrub or tree. When a plant is more stressed it leads to insect issues and possible death.

A fowl surplus
After my sister telling me about getting started with bees. She was telling me about the fact that her hens are sitting on a large quantity of eggs. She, at this point, has 17 live chicks and only 2 died. Also, her ducks are sitting on eggs. If the trend keeps up, there may be a waiting list to get into freezer camp.

Repurposing the flatware for purposes of extracting some prize-winning scallion
This old feral picnic knife became just the thing to dig delicately, yet assertively and efficiently around some scallion that has been super easy to grow--and what even grew especially well in slightly clay-ier soil. The scallion appears to spread similar to chives so I didn't even plant any this year and still am…

New to me--Phenology
Just what we all need--another garden project! This post which showed up on today's email got me started: Quite intriguing, but short, hardly more than a taste, as was the source she cites, Wisconsin Horticulture Extension--she pretty much just copied what they have to say. So next stop, even more intriguing and likely to…

Vegetables and Walnut Leaves
So I did a dumb thing. Since there was no straw available in this area this year, I have been scrounging for every possible kind of garden mulch, and leaves are one obvious option. I've been gathering lots of leaves....But today I realized that I dumped two wheelbarrow loads that are probably around 25% walnut leaves on…

Food banks
Food banks are becoming a norm around here as job are disappearing or hours are being drastically cut. Many of our local churches have food pantries and I help with several. Rabbits - raising in cages or colonies
When I had rabbits in my teens I raised them in very large pens in a colony style. Later I went to cages. I am not really sure why, maybe easier moving of pens? easier kefir
There is a standard way to make kefir with kefir grains. I've tried that before and actually was drinking alcoholized milk before realizing that things weren't working right. I found the process time consuming and couldn't get a good system going with it. Now I do it a much easier way: I buy unflavored kefir from the…
