Nutrient deficiencies
I know that I'm lacking in some vitamins and nutrients because my body is trying to tell me. And I'm hoping my doctor can help me figure out which they are with bloodwork. But I don't want to just "pop a pill" to take these vitamins and necessary nutrients. Do any of you know of herbs or other foods I can start…

Spring herb Ribwort Plantain
Yesterday, to my surprise, I found a few green leaves of Ribwort Plantain. There is still plenty of snow in my garden so I was even more happy to find the first green herbs. This is my favourite plant for cough, hoarseness, throat ache. I pluck a leaf and chew it slowly. I feel the mucus from the plant and this mucus…

White Willow Bark as a Tincture?
I bought some powdered white willow bark. I am now wondering if it would be a good idea to make a tincture with it? I'm thinking that it would be easier to take it that way instead of mixing the powder with water. Has anyone used it as a tincture? I may also tincture some eucalyptus powder for the same reason.

When There Is No Doctor online training
I recently took advantage of the Grow Network's sale of Doc Jones' When There Is No Doctor video training. It is a great course. I have three more video lessons to watch. My favorite so far is the 2.5 hour Plant Walk video where Doc Jones walks you through his medicinal plant garden. It is helpful to see what the mature…

How do you organize and store your natural and home medicine information?
Is your information on electronic media or on paper? Do you have it organized, either electronically or on paper, in alphabetical order, or random? Is it organized by name, use, or .... you get the idea.

Linden Tree and Decoctions
I have a few beautiful Linden trees down by the creek. What made me notice it at first is for some reason the leaves catch the sun and glow a golden color on the creek. Watching the ripples in the creeks gives a great feeling of calm to my soul. I also noticed the pretty flowers in the spring. My friend told me it makes a…

What is your homemade libation of choice for watching TGN home medicine summit this past week?
Mine hands down this week was dandelion aperitif. And it isn't just for before mealtimes anymore!!! The concoction turned out tremendous. Literally the best thing I've ever tasted. Priceless. Here is the recipe. I filled my 5 L stainless steel cooking pot half full with ONLY ORGANIC dandelion petals. The yellow petals need…

Today's lesson-wild yam in Chinese medicine
My chosen herb for one of my classes is wild yam. This week we had to discuss how wild yam is used by other cultures, and guess what. It's not really used by other cultures. Wild yam is grown mostly in the U.S and Canada. However, there are others in the yam family that are used in Chinese medicine. Long yam is used for…

Why Colloidal Silver does not Kill Good Gut Bacteria... (In case you were wondering)
Silver only kills anaerobic (non-oxygen breathing) bacteria, the friendly bacteria in the digestive tract are immune to it because they are aerobic (oxygen breathing). Because no known disease-causing organism can live in the presence of even minute traces of silver. Science Digest cites colloidal silver as "...a wonder of…

Today's lesson-lets talk eclectics
Eclectics were one of first Western herbal practices, or group of people that got together and began using herbs the same way with the same beliefs. They are the ones who believed that each herb had its own signature and that people who also had that signature would get the most benefit from that herb. For example,…

One at a time or scattershot?
I am still fairly new on my herbal medicine journey. By fairly new I mean that I really started about a year ago. I'm finding my quest for learning to be a little overwhelming which is one of the reasons that I'm here. Do you guys find that it's easier to learn by the herb (I will admit to being a little obsessed with…

Public Pool Pink Eye - the curious case of conjunctivitis
I was born with one bad eye and one Really Bad eye. As in, one is legally blind. I have never had pink eye before, so of course the first time I do it has to swell my "good" eye almost completely shut. So here I squint, face inches from the computer display, typing out a plea for help! What are your best home medicines for…

Building immunity from the germs at school
My daughter started her 1st year of student teaching and she's been sick at least 4 times in a little over 2 months. She seems to be catching everything from the kindergarteners. Do you have an heirloom recipe handed down through the family?
As a small child, I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who took my brother and I out foraging (he didn't have a garden of his own.) We would come home with our "treasures" and then he would show us how to make up remedies in the kitchen. Most of what he learned was self taught from library books (no Pinterest back…

Aronia Berries Anyone?
So we purchased an Aronia berry bush last year to add to the diversity of what we grow, and it has produced fabulously this year! Does anyone else grow these berries? What do you do with them? Extra strong herbs and natural medicine
I have found that gardening in the desert really concentrates the flavors of your herbs and vegetables. For example, some years ago I grew icicle radishes that ended up with a heat rating of about 6 out of 10. My current basil plants have a mouth "sting" and strong flavor that is impressive. Ditto for my mint plants. I…

Home Medicine 101 is a good series

Making Herbal Medicine is a fun and educational class
I am a big fan of Dr. Patrick Jones after taking this class! He is funny, knowledgeable and seems to be a great guy. After all, he is a veterinarian, herbalist and father of 15 children (unknown number were adopted.) If I lived in his area, I would be taking my animals to see him. Luckily, I can obtain his herbal services…

Tincturing fresh herbs - how much alcohol do you need?
@bmaverick and I were just discussing the differences in making tinctures with fresh versus dried herbs. With dried herbs I…
