New member: Tips for Getting Started
Hi everyone. I am excited to be a new member of this community. I have a lot to learn from all of you. I have had a garden in years past, but it was not very successful for many reasons. One issue I have is the soil is primarily clay and difficult to work with. So, I want to try my hand at raised garden beds. I have two…

Why raised beds vs in the ground?
Hello. I'd like to understand why the emphasis on raised beds? It's costly! Either wood or cinder blocks, and then to buy the soil, as I just moved to a place in January and haven't been composting here; can get free horse manure from my daughter. I don't need to be "comfortable" so what's wrong with planting in the…

A funny thing happened in the garden!
On Saturday morning I went out to the car and saw what looked like a dead mouse laying at the end of the garden! I thought about picking him up (I am forever grateful I didn't!) I ran my errand and came back home and looked for the mouse. Much to my surprise the mouse was on his feet! Can you imagine if I tried to pick it…

Raised bed Garden
I asked my son to make a raised bed and he didn't listen to me as much as I would have liked. He insists it needs a bottom with drain holes. I ordered some worms locally and will pick them up ahead of the garden. What can I do with the worms ahead of time (a week). They will come in a yogurt container (I do not know what…

Recommendations of filling new raised beds with soil, where or what to buy?
I'm new to gardening and will be installing 4 raised beds. I'll need about 4.5 cubic yards of raised bed soil. Is there a recommendation on where to buy this? I feel the special Miracle-Gro organic raised bed soil from lowes or home depot isn't a top choice. Thanks in advance.

Albany, NY - Recommendations of filling new raised beds with soil, where and what to buy
Hi, I'm new to gardening and will be installing 4 raised beds, here in Albany, NY in Zone 5. My native soil, consists mostly of clay under the topsoil. To fill these raised beds, I’d need about 4.5 cubic yards. From what i’ve gathered, raised bed soil is a mixture of garden soil and potting mix. I also like the idea of…

Is it safe to use treated wood for raised bed gardens?
The answer to that question used to be a solid "no", but I recently came across this post by The Natural Handyman who says the old chemicals used before are not in use now. And it's safe to use pressure treated lumber. The Natural Handyman says: until 2003, the most common preservative used for pressure treated wood was…

What to use at the bottom of a Smartpots Urban Raised bed?
Other than sticks. will leaves and card board work for a SmartPots Urban Raised bed? It's a 4x4 Fabric container stood up with PVC for stability. I heard sticks are good, but since it has a bottom, I'm wondering if cardboard and leaves can be used as well. Thank you.

Raised beds alongside an apartment building
I live in an apartment building on the ground floor in a corner spot. I have gardens on two sides, East and North. Last year I grew greens on the North. I was planning to grow Beets and carrots on seed tapes on the North but I may put something in the carrot spot. I planned to grow green beans on tripods; onions in between…

Building garden beds with what is on hand
We had run off flooding from across the road one year. It dumped a huge amount of rock in the yard - so I made garden beds. They were filled with straw, sawdust, manure and grass. They also served a purpose of stopping any runoff from coming in the yard in future years It was great therapy building these beds

Growing in Elevated Planters - Help please?
As my sister is aging, she has asked me to build her some elevated planters. Another friend, hearing our discussion, remarked that might help her also, as (although younger) she is no longer able to get down to the ground following a horrific automobile crash a few years ago. Another girlfriend just doesn't want to tear up…
