New member: Tips for Getting Started
Hi everyone. I am excited to be a new member of this community. I have a lot to learn from all of you. I have had a garden in years past, but it was not very successful for many reasons. One issue I have is the soil is primarily clay and difficult to work with. So, I want to try my hand at raised garden beds. I have two…

Cat & dog soiled soil: How to get rid of odor
I have a 14 inch high raised bed garden and I have had both cat and dog poop on top and buried in the soil. How do I get rid of the smell? I also believe the wood could be sprayed by a cat or poisoned in some way-what I can I do to get rid of the smell? Is there something I can do to for the soil other than removing it?

Recovering a flower bed
When we bought our property, the neighbors had a very nice flower bed in the back yard, a mix of bulbing flowers, rhododendrons, and reseeding annuals. Unfortunately my own focus has always been on stuff to eat,so I have neglected the flower bed and it's now overgrown with grass. In several places, small trees have started…

Recommendations of filling new raised beds with soil, where or what to buy?
I'm new to gardening and will be installing 4 raised beds. I'll need about 4.5 cubic yards of raised bed soil. Is there a recommendation on where to buy this? I feel the special Miracle-Gro organic raised bed soil from lowes or home depot isn't a top choice. Thanks in advance.

Albany, NY - Recommendations of filling new raised beds with soil, where and what to buy
Hi, I'm new to gardening and will be installing 4 raised beds, here in Albany, NY in Zone 5. My native soil, consists mostly of clay under the topsoil. To fill these raised beds, I’d need about 4.5 cubic yards. From what i’ve gathered, raised bed soil is a mixture of garden soil and potting mix. I also like the idea of…

Beware of the spread of Asian Jumping Worms in North America
This article explains what they are, why they are bad, when they got to North America, & how to hopefully reduce the chance you will get them. It includes a very good video that will help you identify them. The guy in the video mentions southern Minnesota. That's not far from Manitoba. I wonder if the Canadian province…

Garden soil experiment, adding used coffee ground complete with cinnamon & turmeric
There is a small plot of soil in my backyard that is currently growing weeds. I had originally buried compostable materials there until my husband complained about seeing the "garbage" I had thrown in the yard. The soil here is sandy with little nutrients and very alkaline. My current experiment is to sprinkle the dried…

Growing in Elevated Planters - Help please?
As my sister is aging, she has asked me to build her some elevated planters. Another friend, hearing our discussion, remarked that might help her also, as (although younger) she is no longer able to get down to the ground following a horrific automobile crash a few years ago. Another girlfriend just doesn't want to tear up…

What Every Homeowner Needs To Know About Compost Piles (Video)
Hi again! I had some friends over at my property in Paonia, CO. While I was gone, they decided to build a compost bin for me . And let's just say it's a lovely compost area. Super awesome of them! Now I have the chance to tell you about a classic mistake you should avoid when building your compost system. The system they…

Weed Suppression With Ground Cover
I looked around for this topic but so far did not find it. I have used black plastic, landscape fabric and cardboard to suppress weeds prior to planting. Laid out over a good "crop" of weeds the soil turns black and crumbly and has earth worms running through it. The landscape fabric or black plastic can have holes punched…

Vermicomposting
I recently started growing microgreens and saw an article about how you can vermicompost the left over roots and soil to make new soil for growing your microgreens and the process is a lot faster than regular composting. I'm interested but have no experience with vermicomposting. I'm hoping once you get past the learning…

Cactus/succulent "mix" or "cactus compost" - say what?
Hi folks, I recently acquired some haworthia, November cactus, "Gollum jade" and another I don't recall the name of right this second. Improved milk with improved pastures
I am posting a link to this discussion for those who have cows & may have extra milk. Aside from feeding it to livestock & making things with it such as milk paint, this would be worth trying to see if you might get the same results. With a high producing cow calving shortly, we might just have to try this. Any further…

Mouldy soil on house plants
Hi! I've notice white mould on my indoor house plants. I've tried a few essential oils (tea tree and rosemary) in water to kill it off, but that didn't work. Should I use more oil? Is there anything else I can try? Any help is appreciated! A few of my plants are getting weird yellow/brown blotches on the leaves and I think…

Fixing alkaline soil... suggestions?
We recently did some basic soil testing in my raised garden beds and discovered that my soil is very alkaline. This explains why certain plants seem to do well and others (ones that prefer acidic soil) do terrible. It doesn't help that the city water is very alkaline too. Has anyone been successful at amending gardening…

What is this?
Hello All, I have found that I am inundated with these plants; not sure if they need eradication or foraging... They have absolutely taken over any space that is not grassy. I found hundreds of them clumped inside a raised bed that hasn't been used in several years ( We just moved in about 2 months ago- house was empty…

Dirt-it ain't pretty anymore
Someone asked me a question yesterday, and it got me thinking. I live in the Midwest where every field is full of the corn/soybean rotation (This year is soybeans). Not far from me is an area called "the muck" where they grow vegetables like cabbage and peppers. Well. this past spring my husband and I were driving thru the…
